Duty exemptions are available in certain special circumstances. You may qualify if you are:

  • A person with a disability holding a valid badge,

  • A returning resident importing your own vehicle (or a right-hand drive equivalent if moving from a left-hand drive country),

  • A foreign diplomat or exempted official.

Carluv has experience working with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to secure duty-free clearance.

Kenya does not allow importing of LHD vehicles but allows duty-free importation of an equivalent RHD vehicle for returning residents of a LHD country like USA.

It depends on the car’s value. For low valued mass imported vehicles of below KSH 2 million it is normally cheaper to buy locally in Kenya. However, for high end cars like SUVs and pickups normally priced beyond KSh. 2.5m it can be cheaper to import. There is also the aspect of “foreign used car” which may mean you could get a car in better condition due to better road conditions, rigorous testing and maintenance.
